Jack, Queen, King and Ace of Spades – New costume prints
Almost 2 years ago, I was part of a team project for which many girls had to build costumes and provide pictures for a special card deck. Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and Jokers… and I got the Spades. :D Unfortunately, the project never came to an end, but I still had these breathtaking pics that I finally decided to unveil for Halloween 2019. My Joan of Arc inspired Jack/Knight, my dangerous Queen of Spades with her Elizabeth I of England’s ruff collar, my outstanding King with his Henri VIII inspired coat and my one of a kind Ace… There’s nothing historically accurate in there, of course. Each costume is just a fanciful and contemporary version loosely inspired by a historical figure, but it was an interesting and challenging research.
Check out the gallery to see the whole series. All the pics are available as autographed prints. I posted some making of pics on my social medias, but I have way more pics than that. If I have some time, I’ll eventually add some making of pics in the gallery. :)
The level of detail put in those costumes is outstanding!🤯 This is on the level of Hollywood historical dramas, you’re extremely talented (and very detail-oriented).
By the way, were you aware of a certain NSFW connotation regarding the Queen of Spades before you were assigned to it? (I just recently got a tattoo for it, it’s similar to what you have on your back for the Ace photo but with a white “Q” inside it 🤫😸).
Hi Suzy,
Thank you so much for your comment! :) Even though I started building photosets and making various props over the years, sewing will always remain my real passion. It makes me very happy when someone notices and enjoys my sewing work. :)
To be honest, I only learned about that NSFW connotation regarding the Queen of Spades when I released the pics. I had never heard of it before, especially since I don’t think that this connotation has an equivalent in French. lol In French, ‘Queen of Spades’ is ‘Dame de pique’ and it truly has no other meaning, at least not as far as I know! lol I had not specifically chosen the spades, there were other girls in the project who were making costumes for the other suits. Unfortunately, the project never happened and I ended up releasing my pics alone, out of their original context.
Thanks again for your comment! MC xox
God, that must’ve been so frustrating for the project to never happen, all that work for nothing :( It’s good that you were able to release it on your own though, it deserves to be seen and admired.
Btw, I asked my friend from France and they do have sort of an equivalent for QoS among the French-speaking people in the lifestyle although it’s still pretty obscure: BÃ B. I was actually thinking of emailing you about the subject, would you be interested?
Hi Suzy,
It happens, you know, a lot of projects are planned and a lot never happen! lol But I am happy, indeed, that I could release the pics by myself and show those great costumes I had worked on so much.
No, I had never heard of that expression in French! lol
I absolutely love this series of “King & Queen + Hamlet.” The costuming of King & Queen is incredible — Really Incredible!! And nude Hamlet speaks for itself. :-)
I have my copy of this print in hand and it’s amazing!! Absolutely incredible photo. Given the volume of MCB photos I have in my portfolio that’s saying something!! She never ceases to amaze me.
